Do not train a child to learn by force or harshness; but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each.

Frequently Asked Questions

Would I make a good School Board School participant?

School Board School participants are very different, with different backgrounds, skills sets, and experiences, but what they have in common is that they:

  • Believe in the ability of every one of the district’s children

  • Are knowledgeable about the community

  • Have demonstrated a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness

  • Are eager to learn

  • Have a track record of positively impacting the community

Additionally, you should be excited to join an organization that is new and is learning as we build this program. We want people who are flexible, entrepreneurial, and are comfortable with emergence.

Are there any hard and fast requirements?

At School Board School, we invest a lot in our participants and expect that they, in turn, will invest in their own learning. To that end, participants must agree to attend all of the sessions and field trips, and to arrive on time and prepared. Additionally, participants sign a media waiver so that we can share all the good stuff we’re doing with the world. That means you need to be okay with your participation in this program being public knowledge. We don’t want anyone’s boss or family to be surprised when they see a picture of you on a school tour during your long “lunch!”

How much of a time commitment is School Board School?

Participants need 5-10 hours a week to devote to the program. Some weeks, that is time on your own reading and preparing for group sessions or meetings. But often, that time is with the group. It’s important for participants to have flexible daytime schedules in order to attend board meetings and school tours. For those of you considering serving on the board, you’ll need a flexible daytime schedule and at least 10 hours a week (AT LEAST!) to devote to the work, so now’s a good time to start considering these variables.

Theory of Action.

We offer interactive learning experiences with content area experts and create a community of engaged citizens who believe that every child can achieve and that it is our collective responsibility to build and support school systems that allow every child to thrive.

To be effective in this work, we believe school board members and education advocates must be grounded in a strong sense of purpose and have a deep understanding of the most important issues affecting students in their community. They must listen to the needs of the school community, understand their roles, support their district and school administrations, build coalitions, and work collaboratively to pass and implement meaningful policies.

About School Board School

The Who + Where

Who would make a good School Board School participant?

To improve outcomes for children and build a more just and equitable city, we must invest in the development of district leaders who reflect the diversity of the children we serve. School Board School specifically targets its recruitment efforts at constituents who have demonstrated their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness, and is purposeful in building a diverse applicant pool so that the district’s school board and community leaders reflect the diversity of the district.

While we focus on recruiting applicants of different backgrounds, skills, and experiences, all applicants share a passion for and knowledge of the community, a belief in the ability of all the district’s children, a willingness to learn, a track record of having positively impacted their community in the past, and a commitment to being “Ready to Serve.”

Where is School Board School?

School Board School is currently focused on the Cincinnati Public School district, with plans to expand to other districts soon. If you are interested in bringing School Board School to your community, please get in touch with us at elisa@schoolboardschool.org . We’d love to talk!

For the 2019-2020 class, we will accept up to five participants from other districts in the Cincinnati metro area who want to learn about the role of a school board member and apply what they learn to their own district.
