There’s a whole lot happening at the Ohio Statehouse that impacts education in our local schools. This session was co-hosted by School Board School, Campaign for Our Shared Future, and Honesty for Ohio Education to learn about key events from the 2022 legislature, what to expect for 2023, and what you can do about it.

What Does A School Board Do? How Do I Make My Voice Heard?

Your school board makes decisions that impact students in your community every day. This session was led by Cincinnati Public Schools Board Member Carolyn Jones, Lakota Public Schools Board Member Julie Schaffer, and former CPS Board Member Elisa Hoffman. We learned about the role of a school board and how to effectively advocate during hearing of the public.

How To Organize Your Friends & Neighbors

Is there an issue in your school district that keeps you up at night? Chances are there are other people in your community who share your concern. This session was led by former Cincinnati Public Schools Board Member Eileen Cooper, Forest Hills Community Organizer Andrea Granieri, and Chief Organizing Officer at Red Wine and Blue, Julie Womack. We learned how to bring people together around a shared cause.

In statehouses across the country, we’ve seen an uptick in legislation that will make schools less safe, inclusive, and equitable places for LGBTQ+ students. Check out this session where we learned about what’s happening, why, and what you can do from Ohio State Representative Rachel Baker; Tim’m West, Executive Director of the LGBTQ Institute at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights; and Sean Meloy, VP of Political Programs at the Victory Fund.
